meerkat
Meerkat. Meerkats are highly sociable Mongooses, living in groups of up to 40. They hunt, sleep, play and defend their territories together.
When the family is away hunting, one adult remains behind to take care of the youngsters. A female babysitter will even suckle another females offspring.
While the family forages for food or rests in the shade, one of the group acts as look-out. It scans the sky for Eagles, and the ground for jackals and snakes
that might prey on them. Standing tall on top of the nearest perch, Meerkats use the tip of the tail to support the body, like a tripod.
When an enemy approaches the look-out gives an alarm call, a different cal for each type of predator, and the family runs for cover.
