20/52 Pictures of the Tower of London

Lanthorn Tower, the castles second largest tower, seen from the Inner Keep area.
The was constructed between 1238 and 1272 when it was built by King Henry
III and was then connected to Wakefield Tower. The name of the tower comes
from its use as a marker to nearby ships along the Thames via a lantern that
was lit here each night in the top turret. In the 1800's Lanthorn Tower was
home to the Mater of Ordnance. The original tower was mostly destroyed by a
fire in 1774 and was then completely demolished. It was then reconstructed
from 1851 onwards.
