37/52 Pictures of the Tower of London

The White Tower, standing 90 feet high with walls
between 11 and 15 foot thick. This was the original Tower. Construction was started by William the
Conqueror in 1078 and finished after 1097 by his sons and successors. The Tower
was made with Caen stone and
occupies the central area of the Tower of London.
This is where the displays of armour
and weaponry on through the centuries are held. The White Tower was used as
the main Kings Armoury from the 14th century and main repository for gun powder through the
seventeenth century.
The north east turret was once
the location for the first Royal Observatory. In 1974 a bomb exploded here
killing one person. It is thought to have been the work of the IRA.
