Introduction: The Premier Inn City Tower Hill Hotel is
located on the eastern edge of the City of London (square mile), which is known
as London's financial area. However these days that reputation is also becoming
attached to the Docklands/Canary Wharf area which is just 2 miles to the West.
This location is also convenient for the City of London Airport which is easily
accessed via the A1261 Aspen Way dual carriageway at just over 5 miles. The
hotel actually lies between Wapping and Aldgate. Wapping runs along the banks of
the River Thames and takes in places of interest such as St Katharine Docks.
Aldgate is at the start of the Whitechapel and Commercial Roads, a busy area
with a high density of shops and factories specialising in all areas of the
fashion and garment trade. While not in the same league as the fashionable
shopping of the central London areas, the surrounding areas do have a large
number of shops and restaurants. Perhaps best known is Brick Lane with its huge
number of Asian shops and restaurants. Well known as the place for late/early
morning snacks and bagels. 0.4 miles to the north towards Bishopsgate is
Petticoat Lane market, running for over 400 years and specialising in fashion
and clothing. Within 0.6 miles is Old Spitalfields Market along Commercial
Street, once a wholesale grocery market but now a shopping mall with shops and
restaurants. Other nearby attractions include the
Tower of
London (0.2 miles), Whitechapel Art gallery (0.3 miles), Royal Armouries and
Fusiliers museum (0.4 miles),
Design
Museum (0.6 miles),
HMS Belfast
(0.6 miles),
Monument (0.7 miles) and the
London
Dungeon (0.9 miles).
