Introduction: The building is a major £60 million pounds
reconstruction project of the Grade II listed Lowndes House, the former Singer
sewing machine building, along with some totally new construction. At the time
of opening in October 2007 the Travelodge London Central Moorgate hotel was the largest
hotel ever opened by this chain. Close to Finsbury Square the hotel serves the
City of London known locally as the square mile and is the financial heartland
of London. Located to the east of central London its location is just south of
Old Street and the Hoxton area. Just east of the hotel is Bishopsgate and the Broadgate complex while just to the south is Moorgate (with several shops and
bars including a Marks & Spencer store a short walk away). The main tourist
areas are some 2 miles to the west of the Travelodge Central Moorgate. The area is bustling during the week when
its full of office workers who are well served with restaurants and bars during
that time (including a late night bar almost adjacent to the hotel), however
weekends the area is much quieter as most workers live outside of London. Less
than a mile to the south is the banks of the River Thames. Walking paths go
alongside the river and many bars have views over the Thames. Local places of
interest include Old Spitalfields Market (0.5 miles), which as the name implies
was a huge covered market but is now home to a range of shops and cafes. Just
past Spitalfields is Petticoat Lane Market (0.6 miles), established over 400
years ago and a thriving marketplace for fashion and Asian oriented goods. Major
attractions include the
Barbican Arts Centre (0.3 miles),
St
Pauls Cathedral (0.8 miles) and the
Tower of
London (1 mile).
