HEATHROW EAST TERMINAL INFORMATION
Heathrow East is the name of the area where works for a brand new terminal to replace the current terminal 2 along with the Queens building that sits adjacent are taking place. The £2.2 Billion (part of a wider £4.4 billion pound investment) pound project started in 2009 and is expected to be completed by 2014. Announced in 2005 planning permission was granted in May 2007. A modern state-of-the-art building that will be environmentally friendly by reducing the current CO2 emissions of terminal 2 by 40%. Total passenger capacity will increase from 10 million to 30 million when the project is finished.
One of the biggest innovations will be the use of a process called biomass gasification. A process that uses waste wood as fuel to power a heat and power plant within the terminal itself.
The terminal is due to open as a phase 1 project in 2012 to coincide with the London Olympics 2012.
