The racecourse dates back to 1711 when it was founded by Queen Anne. One of the UK’s premier racecourses is Ascot racecourse. Perhaps best known for hosting the prestigious Royal Meeting each year in June, indeed until 1945 the Royal Meeting was the only meeting held at Ascot. The first Royal Meet dates back to June 1768 and in modern times is the most popular race meeting in Europe. In 1965 jump racing also came to Ascot. The Royal meeting has as much to do with fashion as it does with racing with Ladies day during the meet seeing an endless parade of high fashion from those in attendance. The Royal part of the name also is not just pr, each year the Royal family attend the races with the royal parade down the racecourse in horse drawn carriages itself being a feature off the start of racing.,
Probably the best known races haled here are the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and the Ascot Gold cup. The King George being the fiurst true test of the top 3 year olds against their elders at 1 and a half miles. Normally the years Derby winner will be an entrant. The Gold Cup being a long distance race and will tend to see horses running in the race for several years. One of the most popular horses to run in the race never actually won it, Persian Punch, one of the true great stayers of the 21st century.
In 2006 Ascot finished redevelopment of the course with a new Grandstand at its heart featuring a parasol roof suspended on 'structural trees', 300 private boxes and even has a hotel within its centre. With a capacity for 80,000 spectators the New Grandstand is 350 meters long and 40 meters deep. The old stand had been standing since 1965.
Ascot is a Right-handed triangle shaped course, and just over 1m6f round. There are actually two courses, the round one and a straight mile. All races up to 7f are run on the straight mile course.
During Royal Ascot the gates open at 10.30am and for all other meetings the gates open at 11.00am
