Construction of the Barbican arts centre started in 1962 on a site that was the remains of a bomb wrecked expanse of ground, a world war 11 legacy. Not completed until 1982 the Barbican Arts centre now boasts a complex with shopping, places to eat, 3 cinemas, concert hall, theatres, conference centre, public library and an arts gallery with two exhibition areas. The art gallery hosts constantly changing exhibitions. The barbican is the largest multi-arts and conference venue in Europe. There always something going on at the centre whether it be a jazz or classical concert, a latest blockbuster film, one of the numerous shows or the latest exhibition in the arts gallery.
