Chiswick House was designed by the third Earl of Burlington, Richard Boyle
(1694-1753) in 1725 as a place for entertaining and for keeping his books and
works of art. Today the house stands today as a great example of 18th century
construction and design. The house comprises a Palladian Villa style like look
with a luxurious interior and an extensive classical landscaped gardens. The
house was inspired by the Earls trips to Italy and especially by the Villa Capra
"La Rotonda" near Vicenza. The work to the inside of the Villa was carried out
mostly by William Kent.
The interior includes paintings and prints that provide an insight to the life
of Burlington family. Paintings include works by old masters. Inside you will
also find splendid examples of Palladian furnishings.
Restoration work of the house, sculptures and monuments is an ongoing process
carried out by the friends of Chiswick House trust.
Chiswick House has a rich history. Former prime minister George Canning (1827)
and and foreign secretary Charles James Fox (1806) died in the very same room
while Past presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson visited the house.
There are charges for this attraction.
