CLINK PRISON MUSEUMADDRESS: 1 Clink Street Southwark London SE1 9DG Phone: 020 7403 0900 nearest train stations: The Clink Prison Museum occupies the site of the former Clink Prison (possibly the oldest mens prison and probably the oldest womens prison in England) which was in operation till the Tudor period of 1780. One piece of trivia is that Shakespeare visited an old school friend in the prison. Visitors can experience first hand what it was like to be held prisoner all those centuries ago. With a range of torture equipment on display (many original) and telling the history of Clink prison. The word Clink today is used a slang term to refer to prison. During its day the prison was entwined in history with the Mayflower, Gunpowder Plot, Babington Plot and more. |
