The museum is actually Freud’s former residence which he moved to in 1938 from
Vienna. It as used by the Freud family as a residence until the death of Anna
Freud in 1982, at which point the house was turned into a museum. Pride of place
amongst the exhibits is the couch used by Freud while psychoanalyzing his
patients. However there are many other items on public including painted
furniture from the 1700’s and 1800‘s and other pieces of antique furniture. A
large part of Freuds personal library is on display at the house. These are the
books he kept after selling many books before he moved to Hampstead from Vienna.
In the study and front room is Freuds own collection of Antiquities and very
much a museum his own making on their own. The study is as it was while Frued
was working here. His own collection of objects actually exceeded over 2,000.
Selected items include Terracotta Cone of Gudea (Mesopotamian, ca. 2135 B.C),
Frontal Covering of a Mummy (Egypt, 332-30 B.C.), Athenian red-figured Lekythos
(Greek, 50-440 B.C. ), Sphinx (South Italian, ca. 5th century B.C.), Bodhisattva
(China, ca. 1600 A.D.), Athena (Roman, Ist or 2nd century A.D., after a Greek
original of the 5th century B.C.).
On the First Floor is the The Anna Freud Room with displays of her work and
items that show the type of woman she was. Anna was Freuds youngest child.
The house also includes a prize winning garden.
Open Wednesday to Sunday 12 - 5 p.m.
Closed Boxing Day.
