Harrods is famous the world over a store with a reputation for excellence in its customer service, and quality, upmarket merchandise. The stote motto is 'Everything for Everybody Everywhere'. The store has five floors with 1,000,000 sq.ft (4.5 acres) of floor space. The building generates 70% of its own energy from in-house generators, extracts water from its three artesian , has forty elevators which in total travel the equal of 39,800 miles each year.
In 1985 the store was purchased for £615,000,00 by its larger than life owner Mohamed Al-Fayed from the House of Fraser Group. Although located in Knightsbridge the store actually began life in the East End of London in 1834 as grocery store specializing in Tea, moving in 1849 to its current location. Over the years other stores than adjoined Harrods have been purchased and Harrods itself extended. Hard to believe that in 1849 it was just a single room store with two assistants.
