The Imperial War Museum is dedicated to total coverage of all aspects of Wars that have occurred since the First World War and that involve British and Commonwealth troops. Through the many galleries, exhibits and world renowned paintings it sets out how these conflicts affects the lives of the whole nation. Exhibits are large and small and include aircraft, ships cannons, medals, documents and tanks among the many any items displayed. The museum contains several permanent galleries alongside some ever-changing galleries so repeat visitors will always find something new to see. The permanent galleries are: As the name implies, the larger exhibits are to be found here which include tanks, cannons, guns that were mounted on ships, human torpedo craft, aircraft, Polaris missile and types of submarines. This gallery focuses on the lead up to the first world war and its causes, and the war itself and what it was like for those involved and the larger picture and many fronts the war was fought on. Includes a recreation of a First World War trench. As in the First World War gallery all aspects of the Second World war is brought to light here. From its build up, to its battles and about life for those back at home. Includes The Blitz Experience which is a reconstruction of an air raid shelter and a blitzed street in 1940. The atmosphere is created by the background sounds of the times as well as a faithful recreation of the scene along with the smells associated with the times. This deals with the undercover work of spy's and covert operations by men such as the SAS. Here the exhibits change frequently. Victoria Cross and George Cross Gallery Here you can learn about the life of Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery, affectionly known to the nation as simply, Monty.
