Opened by King George VI on April 27, 1937 the building was formerly the
Royal Hospital School.
One of the largest Maritime Museums in the world. Inside you’ll find 16
galleries devoted to the history, the present and the future of life at sea.
The Museum covers everything from the plant life that thrives in the oceans
to the pirates that sail the waves using interactive displays, art, models,
documents, high tech exhibits and artefacts from the past. The foremost
Museum for the history of Britain at sea. Within the walls are no less than
2 million items. Its art collection is particularly impressive and its
portrait collection is only bettered by the National Portrait gallery.
The museums reference library has over 100,000 volumes.
