The Shakespeare Globe Theatre is a replica of the original theatre that originally stood very close by the current Bankside location and adjacent to the Tate Modern.. It was founded by the American actor and director Sam Wanamake CBEr but who died sadly before the Globe was finnished. Construction began in 1993 and was completed by May 1997 when it first opened with a capacity for 1500 visitors. Today the Globe theatre, an open air theatre, is dedicated to the original works of Shakespeare’s with performances of his plays and also those of his fellow contemporaries. The original Globe theatre was destroyed by fire in 1613. Although rebuilt it was again destroyed in 1642after being closed by the puritans.
The site also includes a Shakespeare's Globe Exhibition which is separate to the
live shows.
