In 1895 the house was opened to the public to maintain the memory of Carlyle and his work and Since 1936 the National Trust has had ownership. The house includes original furniture, possessions and work of Carlyle as well as exhibits added later. The building generates 70% of its own energy from in-house generators, extracts water from its three artesian , has forty elevators which in total travel the equal of 39,800 miles each year. In 1985 the store was purchased for £615,000,00 by its larger than life owner Mohamed Al-Fayed from the House of Fraser Group. Although located in Knightsbridge the store actually began life in the East End of London in 1834 as grocery store specializing in Tea, moving in 1849 to its current location.
