| Rated 3 out of 5: I grew up in this part of Surrey and knew The George Hotel in Crawley well during the 1970s. Wedding receptions, dinners out, nice place for a drink. We use Gatwick now several times a year so I came over all nostalgic and suggested we used The George as our pre-flight and post-flight accommodation with parking to save some money. The deal was really cheap, to include parking our car in their unsecured car park for eight days. It even included a taxi to Gatwick for departure and a taxi back to The George on our return. If we'd driven it meant leaving home at four in the morning to get our early flight and driving back here at nine at night on arrival. With fuel and airport parking charges costing more than the cost of The George. So if you want cheap accommodation, virtually free parking and a reliable taxi service to either terminal then The George is fine. However, my sadness is based on my memories of The George as it once was, and of Crawley as it used to be with its memorable Tudor High Street. The George is simply a reception area for Gatwick customers as it seems to have sold off or leased off the bars and restaurants. I didn't mind the faded glory of the decor, a symbol of times past. Our room was large and clean. But the English Breakfast was dreadful. I enjoy English breakfasts on beach cafes, greasy spoons yet there wasn't one good thing about the presentation, the quality of the food was just awful but the breakfast staff were very good and I wonder if they were embarrassed in serving such food. If you stay over and need a meal the Italian across the road from The George was great. So when budgeting you get what you pay for in The George. On the other hand if they improved their breakfast (which you can opt out of for a tenner) I'd probably use it again. Rated 3 out of 5: Overnight stop to ease the travel to Gatwick airport for next day flight. Hotel room basic, but met needs for costs. TV did not work properly and room was not thoroughly clean. Rated 4.5 out of 5: Stuck at Gatwick in the snow and abandoned by our airline, we got this at the last minute (having first tried all the usual Travelodge, Marriott etc which were full). It's only about 10 minutes from the airport (10 pounds in a taxi) bang in the center of Crawley, which is not a bad place and has a few decent bars, taxi companies and a kebab shop. The George hotel was unexpectedly large and professional (it's not like a guesthouse or B&B) and our room was comfortable if a bit old fashioned in terms of decor. There is a lively on-site Roman themed bar called Octopus and a restaurant too although we didn't try it. The George was 1/3 the price of the sole room that the Gatwick airport hotel reservation agency was able to offer us and we had a nice little overnight holiday in Crawley (ok going on our actual holiday would have been better, but still, British weather eh). I highly recommend the George; it is good, cheap and just as convenient as the main branded airport hotels - plus you're in town rather than stuck at a roundabout on an A-road. |

| Rating out of 10: 2 Date stayed: September 2005 review: We were very disapointed with our stay at the George, the bedroom and bathroom was very scruffy with no hot water being available in the evening. For breakfast we had the choice of "Full English" for ?9.95 each or "Continental" at ?6.95 each. We opted for "Full English" and found it was buffet style with undercooked (pink) sausages, stewed baked beans and solidified scrambled egg. This is the first time ever I have left half a cooked breakfast on my plate. |
