| Rated 4 out of 5: Enjoyed our stay before our flight to Barbados. Car parking all very smooth . Pleasant room in the new wing with access to the executive lounge. The lounge is a pleasant quiet spot with enjoyable canapé. We dined at Amy's and again found this an enjoyable experience with well presented food and a fairly good wine list. We didn't eat the complimentary breakfast as we prefer to use a Club Lounge in the airport. The one downside was the very very long walk to our room in the new wing (I had requested this but not aware of the distance) this coupled with the very long walk to the airport because I presume of the works currently in progress was not good for my chronic sciatica or asthma! For those more healthy individuals this is an excellent pre flight hotel and even with the walk I may be tempted to return next time! Rated 4 out of 5: Check-in was a little fraught as there seemed to be some confusion if our suite had been prepared or not, but the delay gave the Duty Manager the opportunity to welcome us personally to the hotel. Our suite was at the very far end of the new wing which is a long, long way from reception, so we left our suitcases with the concierge while we found our room, then returned to collect our suitcases and take them to the baggage drop in the terminal, as with some airlines at Gatwick it is possible to check bags in the day before a flight. Our overnight bags were left in our car the following morning as we had parked in the Hilton?s own car park, which we had booked as part of our room deal. We found everything in the hotel to be of good quality, both in terms of the physical infrastructure and the service provided by the staff, which appeared to be entirely foreign. The speed of the in-room broadband was 1.5 Gb up and down; adequate rather than blistering. Our suite was suitably spacious and modern, but it had a couple of odd features. One was the lighting; the lighting in the bedroom was much brighter than the lighting in the living room; quite the opposite of what one would expect or what would be useful. Another was to be found in the bathroom; not the Jacuzzi bath but the shower, which is the most complicated I have ever encountered, with three taps (two which open clockwise and one which opens counter-clockwise) controlling six nozzles at different heights between knee and head and which emitted water hot enough to make tea with. Despite being only yards from the runway threshold aircraft noise was barely noticeable. This is in part testament to the quality of the soundproofing and in part a reflection of the noise made by the air conditioning. We did not use any of the bars or restaurants so I cannot comment on them. The Executive Lounge was what one would expect if a little on the small size for such a large hotel. The lounge's continental breakfast was entirely adequate, although the customary dish of something hot (scrambled eggs etc.) was sadly absent. The location next to the South Terminal (with easy access to the North Terminal) is a major bonus; no erratic and overpriced bus transfers needed here. One small tip for visitors to the hotel during the current building works in the adjacent short-term car park; when, coming from the hotel, you arrive at the point at which the passage to the South Terminal is blocked and you are confronted with a sign telling you to turn right into the car park. Do not turn right; instead turn left, then make your way to the front of the car park, alongside the closed walk way, then slightly to your left cross the now-closed road in front of the South Terminal by the overflow marquee and you can the easily enter the South Terminal a few yards down the road. If you take the official route by following the signs you have a much more complicated route during which you find yourself forced down a level only to be promptly forced back up to the level you started from; all a bit of a pain in you are dragging your luggage along. Rated 4 out of 5: Liked: The ease of getting to airport terminal and breakfast Disliked: room too close to stairs and the room had not be cleaned properly Rated 4.5 out of 5: Functional, clean airport hotel. Lovely friendly staff, we were offered a room upgrade (at additional cost) which we declined. Everything went smoothly. Room clean and tidy. Alarm call on time, no faults to report at all. |
