A guest who stayed at the Holiday Inn Express London City gave the accommodation 3 out of 5:
Stayed for a long weekend whilst sightseeing and was a bit anxious after reading some reviews however this hotel was fine. The rooms were clean and well maintained. Although not spacious they were better equiped than some London hotels I have stayed in. Staff were fine and helpful. The continental breakfast was a mad scramble with people falling over each other for food which was a bit annoying but you got there in the end. Certainly if you require absolute silence to get to sleep this place is not for you. The nearby main road and fire station ensure a steady flow of sirens and road noise but it didn't stop me sleeping well every night. The neighbourhood is not the greatest but nor is it the worst. We found a few nice restaurants within minutes walk on at least two nights. If you are looking for a reasonable priced place to sling your hat this is fine. A luxurious hotel and spa weekend will require you to look elsewhere.

Rated 4 out of 5:
I disagree with the reviews posted here about the Express Holiday Inn in Old Street. The hotel is surprisingly decent for a 3* hotel in central London. The noise I stayed in this hotel because I needed a room close to the College of Law where I was sitting my exams. So naturally, quietness was essential but I was not disappointed. It is true that there is a lot of noise in the area but that is because the hotel faces onto Old Street and many of the trendiest bars and clubs in London are located down the road in Shoreditch and Hoxton. So the first recommendation I will make is if want to visit central London but do not want to live in a noisy area, rent a hotel room in the countryside! I asked for a room on the top floor and away from Old Street and was given a room at the back of the hotel. It was fine. Given that I stayed there on a Friday and Saturday night, there were a few guests who would stumble through the corridors back to their rooms and generate some noise but this is not impossible to deal with. Indeed, the hotel maid actually supplied my room with ear plugs on Saturday. It proves that the hotel knows about the noise problem in the area but are trying to do their best to help. The room I liked the room. It was simple but furnished with niceties like a small TV, tea and coffee making facilities, clean carpets, a sofabed/couch, a double bed, clean and usable bathroom, an open wardrobe a small desk and plenty of reading lamps. It would be a tight squeeze for a family of 4 to stay there but 2 people would easily be able to cope. The staff The reception staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. They are actually quite cheery with each other which makes it nice and welcoming in the hotel to see them laughing with each other and not sneering at guests all the time like in some other hotel chains. Breakfast One of the most generous continental breakfast facilities I?ve ever seen in a 3* hotel. The fill up the table with croissants, fruit, yoghurt, and have a toast maker and tea/coffee/juice machine to help yourself to. Surrounding area Old Street is home to really trendy clubs, bars and cultural exhibitions. The people are very unique and the area gets filled up with drinkers on Friday and Saturday nights. There a so many takeaway places so you'll not be stuck for places to get a snack on your way back home at night. Rate I paid ?75 per night as part of a late booking. I would not pay more than that to stay here unless I was travelling with someone. Conclusion This is good hotel. There are worse hotels in London but if you are going to stay here, do not sneer at the noise, it is unavoidable but you can help yourself by bringing ear plus and a positive attitude. Besides, did you come to London to stay in your hotel all the time?!

very good staff. cleanliness of room and other areas.
Disliked: I know it was continental breakfast but I thought the selection was poor, not what I am used to.
Overall: overall it was good.

Rated 3 out of 5:
We stayed at the Express by Holiday Inn London City. Chose this hotel because it had smoking rooms available - many do not welcome smokers any more. The room was comfortable for 3 of us although not very spacious once the sofa bed was out. Very comfortable beds with excellent linen. Breakfast was quite poor for such a large chain but adequate. Only asked a couple of things from the staff and was not impressed with the service - didn't help at all. Exceptional value though and have already recommended Superbreak to friends.

Rated 2.5 out of 5:
Although I was very pleased to be given a room at the back of the hotel (the quieter side) the room was cold and the heater was hanging off the wall. The shower was hot but the spray was bad - hardly any water coming out. Breakfast was poor - the breakfast room was full, you couldn't get near the food, the tables were full or full of dirty dishes and the milk was like water. Overall not good value for money for the ?89 paid.
