A Rubens at the Palace guest rated the hotel 5 out of 5 :
My young adult daughter were planning a trip to London and wanted a very special place to have afternoon tea. I discovered Rubens at the Palace and made a reservation before leaving the United States. I'd heard that the table in front of the window is the choicest of seats, so I requested that. It faces the Royal Mews, which is where the Queen's carriages are kept. This is a bit of a deception, since the carriages are stored inside. Unless Elizabeth goes out for a carriage ride, you are not likely to benefit, so unless you enjoy windows and being stared at or even waved at, don't be too disappointed if you make a reservation and don't secure this particular seat. :-) The price was $22 pounds each. We got sandwiches, scones, and four or five elegant little cakes/tarts, as well as clotted cream and lemon curd. We'd heard of other hotels who serve tea allowing for seconds, so we asked that about those particular dainties, but the young lady serving us said that we were expected to "share." We were a bit disappointed as a couple of the little cakes were pretty small and we had hoped to have our own. We personally could not imagine if we were Diana and Fergie (way back when) coming there to tea, being forced to take our little tea knives and slice those in half. Maybe the hotels featuring seconds charge more to accomodate this. Anyway, I'm just mentioning. The Rubens was such an elegant hotel. It was fun walking by Buckingham Palace to get to it. I would recommend it.

Great location, we were able to walk to Buckingham Palace, St James Park, Big Ben, the London Eye on the River Thames , and Westminster Abbey. The room was comfortable, clean, and luxurious. In our room there was an electric tea pot. and an assortment of teas. Very pleasant after a long day of sight seeing! The staff was eager to please, very attentive to any concern or questions we had. Called us a taxi and gave clear directions when we asked. Breakfast is a good value. Very big selection of food. Very filling. Fruits, pastries, eggs, meat, waffles, juices everything. When you check in, the receptionist will ask if you'd like to add breakfast, say yes-you'd like to try it for one day, it is a discounted price then the one quoted on the phone or online when you book. If you like it, they will bill you the discounted price for the duration of your stay. Also, in the opposite direction of Buckingham Palace, there is a boulevard of restaurants, shops, and a small convenience store with decent prices. Also a good place for souvenirs. We bought milk and cookies there, that went great with our afternoon tea. Indeed expensive, but worth it.

Staying 2 nights at the Rubens to celebrate our daughters 10th birthday was made all the more special by their attention to detail and superb service. We would recommend the Rubens to anyone and will only ever consider them as our first choice when staying in town.

You will be hard pushed to find a Hotel and staff that are more helpful and polite. Nothing is too much trouble. Children very welcome, this Easter they even held an egg hunt which my son really enjoyed. Parents could enjoy afternoon tea while Staff provided entertainment for the children. Food excellent, rooms very very nice, bed excellent. Would highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 :
Excellent hotel in prime position. Our room was overlooking the side of the Palace on a really busy road yet we did not hear the traffic due to fantastic secondary windows. Staff were so friendly and the breakfast and evening carvery were exceptional for a city hotel. Bar staff were a little slow and it was difficult to pay the bar bill but we were not in a rush. The lounges were lovely and so relaxing and the pianist provided background music too. Superb!

Rated 4.5 out of 5 :
Lovely old fashioned individual hotel.Staff were pleasant and helpful, breakfast and afternoon tea excellent, bed comfortable and room and bathroom well stocked.( Tea tray and kettle are hidden in the wardrobe in case you think you haven't got one). We had to stress we had booked a late check out as our booking couldn't be found on our arrival. However that was not a problem . We were locked out of our room after 12 on the day of departure and had to ask for a new key. Apparently this happens automatically but we hadn't been warned. We were charged for the "tea" but it was immediately deducted when we showed them our booking which stated "free tea"!. We'd stay here again.
