| Rated 5 out of 5 : I travel a lot (20+ trips from North America to London / Europe since the start of the year, over 175 nights away from home) yet this is the first time I have written a hotel review. I wanted to take a moment and compliment the staff at the W hotel in London for their great service. The Concierge has been tremendously helpful setting up dinner reservations and arranging theatre tickets. She and her team helped create a fun filled itinerary during my stay. The staff at the front desk and at the bar have also been very friendly. Many of the "boutique" hotels can feel slick and "too cool" - not the case at the W Hotel in Leicester Square. Likes: - Rooms are very well thought out and surprisingly quiet. Very contemporary - Location is great - lots of sights within a short walk - The bar is always hoping on Friday or Saturday - Maid staff seems to know precisely when you leave your room, and cleans when you are out of the room (while this seems intuitive, it often doesn't happen this way) - Decent gym - Spice Market is a good spot for dinner. Food is great. Not so keen - Location is very urban. Lots of people at Leicester Square. At times it feels like Time Square. - Door men... Feels like you are trying to get into a night club at times. - Halls are dark. Again... sometimes feel a bit too much like a night club. If you want a fun place to stay, I would highly recommend the W in London. Rated 3 out of 5 : Hotel is centrally located, building is really impressive. Bar and lobby is very well planned and always busy with cool people (though probably the most expensive around, even if you take off the optional-yet-added 12.5% service). The hotel is really working on the call/nightclub image, I kept on saying this just too cool for me, the typical business person on a visit. rooms are small but well equipped, only issue is that shower and bathroom and essentially two small niches in the room and have the doors automatically close. This really decreases the amount of light coming in to bare minimum, and while does conserve the cool feeling, doesn't help enjoying a decent shower. Aside from that, entertainment system is cool and easy to use. One thing worth noticing - there wasn't any real table and chair to work on, there's only a bar and a bar chair (not the best for longer work sessions). But, the worst aspect is definitely the service. As a SPG old-timer, I don't recall hitting such bad service before. Service was horrendous, mainly from the reception and general admin/management. I had to wait the longest to get a room done (after 5pm!), and was really treated as if anyone is doing me a great favour letting me stay on their property. Was offered water but never actually got them, and did not get the feeling anyone really care about me enjoying my stay. Overall, for the price they charge - this is hype, avoid, many better options in city central. Rated 5 out of 5 : The staff were amazing - always had big smiles on there faces and couldn't do enough for you. The restaurant (Spice Market) was exceptional - dined there 3 times in 3 days - highly recommend the sangria - yum! Rated 4.4 out of 5 : Rooms are cleverly designed to make maximum use of space. They are contemporary and stylish and feel spacious The location makes it great for getting around during the day but is very noisy in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday morning when the clubs close. We were on the top floor and were woken at 3am both mornings Rated 4 out of 5 : Just spent 3 nights in the hotel. Never stayed in a W before so did not know what to expect, especially after all the " less than glowing reviews". Surprisingly, had a very pleasant stay. Very conveniently located to shopping, entertainment and major bus routes. Excellent for getting around. Was on a high floor ( 6th ) did not encounter any of the noise issues that other guests seem to have experienced. Toilet and shower facilities were adequate, not too small. Rain shower head was great, could have done with somewhere to put towels ( may want to rethink that ). Thought the "eco" friendly lights ( which automatically switch off after a while ) was a good idea. Not to panic when it goes out, all you have to do is move and it comes back on ( no big deal ). Not too sure about the "beauty bar" - aka sink area. Shallow therefore mirror and counter top always gets splashed. Hallways are dark and dimly lit, but I guess this is in sync with the "hip and edgy" theme. Overall had a very good experience. This is not a hotel for everyone. You have to know what you are getting into. Not fair to criticize the hotel for things that it does not purport to be. If you are looking for a hip and edgy place, this is it. If you are looking for a civilized, quiet, sedate, zen or sumptuous experience, this is not the place. Great location - may be worth all the "edginess'. PS, left my Blackberry charger in the room ( 630 ) if you can save it for me that would be great. Thank you. Rated 4 out of 5 : So this is a nice, new W hotel. The rooms are of decent size and very stylish. However, you'll want to be one that likes the W Hotel experience to stay here. For example, your sink is located in an island in the middle of the hotel room, the room lights are funky and colored and controlled via modern electronic controls that take some searching and mastery to get used to, the toilet stall has a "green" timer on the light that goes out every 90 seconds (requiring you to wave your arms/newspaper until it sense you...and, yes, it's as bad as your mental image makes it out to be ;-) Having said that, if you really like W's, you'll like this hotel - nice sized rooms for the usual London experience, very comfortable beds, great a/c, and a good location right off of Leicester Square. Also a very "happening" night club - lines outside every night and $15 drinks. Rated 4.2 out of 5 : We stayed on the opening night so there was quite a sense of excitement in the property. Staff were extremely attentive and friendly, not only reception but also house keepers and other back of house people, which was lovely. Design was good, and although the room we had on third floor was small, about 21 FT by 17 FT, a very clever design and layout made it feel very good. (I'll say no more, it'll be a nice surprise when you stay). The bar was not functioning at all well but it was the first night so hopefully they'll get better with practise. |

| Rating out of 10: 1 Date stayed: October 2011 review: It all felt very good at the start, W hotel on Leicester square, in the heart of London and the wish of being treated like a VIP. God sake - It's a W hotel. But don't fool yourself - none of the staff make as if they know you. There is a restaurant, a bar and a nightclub there. When you are a hotel guest, you expect to have access to all of these facilities but there unless you book or ask the concierge to have your name on the guest list (for the nightclub) you have to beg to get in. At the restaurant, it's always "we'll try to do our best to get you a table" - hey guys I am a hotel resident and I need to eat!!!!!!!!!! For the nightclub, even if you leave your name at concierge, they tell you that you are not on the list - specially if you are coloured. At the bar, the waitress was good but the management can never get you a table. The essence of a five star service is all the staff knowing who their guest are and treating them properly. If they can't do that then no need to try and pitch in that league - call yourself a "rent a room place" with external services nearby. Very disappointed - will never go there again!!!!!!! |
