Historically Stratford has been the point at which the county of Essex met London and between 1889 to 1965 actually formed part of the County of Essex. In Roman times this was the lowest point in the River Lea and was used as a crossing point for
travellers to get to Colchester.
Largely countryside in the 19th century, modern Stratford really grew from
the 1960's when the shopping centre that lies at the heart of the town was
built during regeneration of the area. The covered shopping mall is home to
more than 60 shops as a well as an indoor market. During the 1990's regeneration also
took place the the railway station and bus station were built along with
social amenities such as a cinema, and library. The Theatre Royal on Gerry Raffles Square
hosts up to 8 UK premieres each year.
Today the area is
probably best known for hosting the 2012 London Olympics with most of the
events taking place in the Olympic Stadium and Village in the North of the
town.
