| One thing you can be sure of is that if you stay in a Mayfair Hotel
it will be of a high standard, the cost of land within the district
means all Mayfair hotels are competing for high end clients and thus
amenities and facilities but be of a an accordingly high standard. Mayfair in London W1 is one of the most exclusive and up market areas not only in London but in the UK as a whole. Mayfair itself is the area bounded By Oxford Street to the North, Park Lane and Hyde Park to the West, Piccadilly and Green Park to the South and Regent Street to the east. The area is in the London borough of Westminster. A mix of expensive residential properties (mostly apartments), offices and great shopping areas that include the fashion and jewellery of Bond Street, the tourist oriented Oxford Street and the wide selection of shops, stores and cafes on Regent Street. Mayfair gets its name from the two week cattle market that took place in the area between 1686 and 1764 before being banned after complaints from residents, the May fair market. The area as a whole was developed into a fashionable residential district in the 18th century mostly by the Grosvenor family (they have owned property here since 1677) who still own a substantial amount of the property there. Hotels in Mayfair have one of the highest densities for 5 star hotels of any area in the UK. Along with Kensington and Knightsbridge this part of London has one of the highest property costs per square footage of anywhere in the UK. Until the second world war most of the buildings were either residential or one of the many hotels that were erected on and around Park Lane. Since the second world war however more and more properties have been turned into office use. Having a Mayfair address is quite a status symbol for any company. Also renowned for fine downing with no less than 10 Michelin star restaurants in this one area. Hotels in Mayfair are almost exclusively of the 4 and 5 star standard with one of the highest densities of 5 star hotels anywhere inb the world.
