Hampstead itself its best known for its large open park area known as Hampstead Heath. Covering 791 acres its located within two boroughs, Camden and Barnet. To the Northern end of NW3 is Hampstead Village which is busy and popular shopping area, located on Rosslyn Hill, with Hampstead tube station located at its North end. Here are several pubs, restaurants and a good selection of shops. Its an evening venue for those having a night out and can attract visitors from some distances a way. Where the village ends so another popular area within NW3 begins, Belsize Park. This has become a trendy place to live and even small apartments attract large sums of money when changing hands. Many of the former houses are now converted into flats but some large houses can be found especially along East Heath Road which runs alongside the Heath. Belsize Park is centred on Haverstock Hill where Belsize tube station is located along with more shops, bars, restaurants and a cinema. On the western side of NW3 runs the Finchley Road. Here all along you will shops, bars, the large covered shopping mall and leisure centre called the O2 centre and supermarkets. At the Southern end of Finchley Road at the point it meets the postcode of NW8 is a gyratory traffic system which is the area known as Swiss Cottage. In the middle of the gyratory system is a pub called 'Ye Olde Swiss Cottage'. However this is not where the area gets its name from, which was a Swiss Cottage called the 'Cottage Grill' which was located nearby in the mid 1900's. Hampstead itself can trace its history back to 7000bc when a group of Mesolithic forest hunters settled in the area. The doomsday book of 1086 records a location called 'Hamestede' which was centred on a small farm. Hampstead remained an agricultural area through to the 17th century and it wasn't until the 1800's however with the arrival of the railway that Hampstead began to grow into what we see it as today. |
