SE18 London is in South London just south of London City Airport. Once
home to Woolwich Dockyard which was one of the Royal Docks along this stretch of
the River Thames and a base for the construction and repair of ships. SE18 is
perhaps best known as the southern end of the Thames Barrier. Construction
finished in 1984 the Thames Flood barrier is over 1,700 feet wide with four 200
foot openings. The Visitor centre in with SE18 on Unity Way and has exhibits
detailing the history of the Thames and the effects of past floods as well the
story of the construction of the barrier. Also on the northeern edge of SE18 is
the Woolwich ferry which connects the two sides of the River Thames at this
point. Places of interest within SE18 include Artillery Regimental Museum and
the Museum of Artillery in the Rotunda (both on Green Hill), Greenwich Borough
Museum (232 Plumstead High Street) and Waterfront Leisure Centre (Woolwich High
Street). A venue for the 20012 Olympics shooting events.
The area is a sort of star shape with its borders at Thamesmead, East Wickham,
Shooters Hill, Woolwich Common and Woolwich High Street.
