Near To: Norwood - Crystal Palace - Sydenham - Penge SE19 is located to the far south of London well away from the usual tourist spots. Perhaps best known as the home to the Crystal Palace National Sports centre. Completed in 1964 it is a venue for international track and field events as well as being a training centre for budding athletes. Other attractions in SE19 include the Crystal Palace Museum. The original Crystal Palace was built in 1851 to house the Great Exhibition and was dismantled and rebuilt in Sydenham in 1852. The vast building was then used for exhibitions, plays and concerts. In 1936 the Crystal Palace caught fire and was burned to the ground. The small Crystal Palace Museum shows the history of the stunning building. The museum is housed in the old engineering school where John Logie Baird invented television. Crystal Place Park was the worlds first Theme Park with newly discovered dinosaurs and exhibits and also featuring a Children's Farm and Boating Lake. also see: >>>HOTELS NEAR CRYSTAL PALACE STATION |
