Battersea is the area that takes in the postcode of SW11. Its northern border is the River Thames with Chelsea to the other side. Nearest crossing points are Wandsworth, Battersea and Albert bridges. Along York Road, Battersea park Road and Battersea High Street is a major shopping areas with a large range of shops, bars and amenities. On its Eastern border is the large open space and events venue of the 200 acre Battersea Park (famously a place for duelling in past centuries). Large parts of the area are residential with some lower class but quite a number of middle class properties. Its relatively recently that the area has become fashionable with the growth in wine bar type bars along with desirable housing often on ground once used for factories. The area is popular with visitors wishing to be close to the centre of London but not in the most expensive areas. For years the location was dominated by the disused Battersea Power Station which was a protected building which is adjacent to Chelsea Bridge. Currently its planned to turn the building into an entertainment centre. Notable is the busy helipad located near the junction of Lombard Road and York Road by the banks of the Thames. Battersea is synonymous with the dogs and cats home for strays and wanted animals, however this is actually under the SW8 postcode.
Historically this location was farmland noted for pig breeding and for cultivating of Lavender. Like many of the surrounding locations modern growth occurred with the coming of the railways which came to this area in 1838.
