LOOK OUT FOR THIS SIGN
THE DOCKLANDS LIGHT RAILWAY (DLR), WHICH OPENED IN 1987 AFTER 3 YEARS IN
CONSTRUCTION, LINKS THE DOCKLANDS/CANARY
WHARF/ISLE OF DOGS AREA WITH THE CITY OF LONDON. THIS IS A LIGHT RAILWAY SYSTEM
BASED ON THE STEEL WHEELS ON RAILTRACK SYSTEM WITH DRIVERLESS TRAINS.
WHILE THE TRAINS ARE DRIVERLESS THERE ARE DRIVER CONSOLES TO ALLOW FOR MANUAL
USE. DLR ROLLING STOCK LOOKS MUCH LIKE A MONORAIL SYSTEM BUT IN ACTUAL FACT IS
NOT, IT ACTUALLY REJECTED USING A MONORAIL SYSTEM. THE ROLLING STOCK HAS A
MAXIMUM SPEED OF 50 MPH (80 KMH).
THOUGH THE TRAIN SYSTEM TAKES IT NAME FROM THE AREA IT WAS ORIGINALLY INTENDED TO SERVE,
LONDON DOCKLANDS, THE SYSTEM CONTINUES TO EXPAND YEAR ON YEAR INTO AREAS OUTSIDE
OF THIS. CURRENTLY THE DLR EXTENDS FROM ON THE WEST SIDE CANNON STREET, IN THE
CITY OF LONDON. TO BECKTON ON THE EAST SIDE OF LONDON AND JUST PAST LONDON CITY
AIRPORT. DLR EXTENDS FROM THE NORTH AT STRATFORD IN EAST LONDON TO LEWISHAM TO
THE SOUTH OF LONDON AND SOUTH OF THE RIVER THAMES.
THOUGH THE DLR APPEARS ON LONDON TUBE MAPS IT IS A TOTALLY SEPARATE RAIL
SYSTEM. THE DLR DOES HOWEVER HAVE STATION LINKS FOR BOTH TUBE AND NATIONAL
RAIL SERVICES. FURTHER, THE LONDON TUBE SYSTEM AND THE DLR DO SHARE THE SAME
TICKETING SYSTEM. THIS MEANS THE INFORMATION PROVIDED FOR THE TUBE SYSTEM IN
RELATION TO SAY THE TRAVELCARD SYSTEM ALSO APPLY TO THE DLR.
THE SERVICE RUNS 05.30 TILL 00.30.
