our daughter's wedding (not ceremony) was held at this amazing hotel on 31.5.19. From start to end we cannot fault down hall on the 1st class service provided throughout. I cannot get over just how stunning it is here, from the beautiful grounds, the wonderful reception room, surrounding areas of the hotel and perfect bedrooms, just heaven! big well done to georgia and the team for all their hard work, karen for organising and all the lovely staff who helped make my girl's day the best day of her life. Highly highly recommend thank you down hall x.

Large are as just refurbished looks great hoping it lives up to expectations in October 2020. Sunshine on the day would be great. Staff appear attentive grounds and drive immaculate, Parking space could be bigger to allow for the many larger cars in car park.

I must say this hotel and grounds are lovely. The decor very tasteful and the size of the rooms was astonishing. The bathrooms were all clean and well maintained. The grounds were truly amazing. I thought the whole Spa experience was really good. The Jacuzzi, chill room and the steam rooms were my favourites. It was a good experience but I can\u2019t call it a great experience since I was a little disappointed with the quality of the back massage. It was meant to be half an hour. And we paid a lot for it. But they took you in and showed you what to change into. They then left the room for ages! They came back and the massage was only about 10 minutes! Then they left the room again to let us get dressed. My back massage was ok but nothing special. That\u2019s why I gave only four stars. The food was beautifully presented. A slight criticism would be that it was a bit bland. But they had vegetarian food and the bread was lovely and warm! The desserts were really good too. I would come again as the hotel is great and the grounds are lovely. The walks are good. The Jacuzzi and Spa bits were great. But back massage questionable!

Really lovely hotel with super friendly staff. Natasha and Danuta in the restaurant at breakfast were especially helpful. The grounds are to die for and the location great for Stansted but far enough away for a peaceful break. The fact that the hotel is pet friendly and has six designated rooms that open out onto a lovely green area for your pups to run is what really sold it to me. We will return with our dogs next time. I would highly recommend this hotel and it\u2019s great for weddings or any other special occasion. Great value for money compared to what we\u2019ve stayed in before. Thanks Down Hall!

Super venue. Room was nice and big and very quite and the staff really welcoming. The gym was perfect for what you need. The food in the restaurant looked beautiful and tasted nice just very expensive for what it was.

Purchased a Spa package via Spa Breaks. My expectation of the price paid and the luxurious looking hotel was quickly deflated when on arrival the young girl on reception was too busy chatting to her colleague to acknowledge us. Found her very rude. So, as we were taken into our couples treatment room, no soner we stepped in, both therapists spoke over each other! one to my husband and the other to myself. I could not hear a word of the questions they asked re daily routines, the strength of pressure we would like, I just couldn't believe it. \nso, moving forward whilst having the treatment, both therapists were whispering and you could hear them giggling. At one point I felt like getting up and saying enough is enough. They obviously thought this couple don't have ears. But you know when someone is making mouth movement and then interrupting themselves with a cough.\nI am completely dissatisfied with my experience at the Eden Spa!

Myself and two girlfriends had booked a day at the Spa as a girly treat. Sarah on reception was polite and friendly, going out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. Two of us had treatments and my other friend a massage. Oh my goodness ! Just fabulous. Attention to detail was awesome, nothing was too much trouble. Megan and Naomi were the treatment specialists and we couldn't of asked for more.\n\nSurroundings are beautiful, the whole experience made you feel like a million dollars. Would highly recommend.\n\nFantastic day, will definitely be booking again \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026. Maybe birthday treat !

Down Hall sits grandly in acres of beautiful woodland. The beautiful exterior matches the elegant interior, with modern and traditional elements.\nKeeping it country the rooms are traditional, we were given a room in the main house which was beautiful but only had a shower, we asked to be moved so we could have a bath and they upgraded us to a massive room with a large bathroom immediately.\nThe service is not perfect, you have to nudge the staff to be served.\nYou have to pay \u00A320 for 2 hours to use the spa, which I feel should have be complimentary to guests staying at Down Hall, many other 4 & 5 star hotels offer this as complimentary. I did not use the Spa but was hoping to purchase espa products so popped across before leaving to find they did not have the stock and were quite aloof, not friendly or helpful.\nThe English Grill offers hearty food with a slight odd menu. Breakfast is basic to standard.\nDown Hall is beautiful place but felt the staff (with the exception of reception) were not welcoming, friendly or helpful and service was not perfect.

My son treated myself and his partner to a virgin e experience of a spa break here. We really liked the room which was very fresh and clean. The leaflet in the room with a map of the hotel and grounds was very Informative and it was interesting to read the history of the building. We explored Bishop Storford town centre and the lovely countryside surrounding the area. We would definitely stay again.

For Xmas my children bought me a voucher to stay at Down Hall overnight and included in the package were two spa treatments a cream tea and money towards dinner.\n\nI had it all planned months in advance and booked it for the May bank holiday. I was concerned that I hadn't heard from them so called a couple of weeks beforehand to confirm it was all booked and they reassured me it was. I repeated this call the night before but this time they actually checked the spa diary and said that nothing was booked for the spa and all the treatment slots were taken. \n\not make a mistake is understandable, what is not is the way this was handled. I was basically told there was nothing they could do and I should re-book for another weekend, this was despite telling them I had cancelled business to attend on this date. They did nothing to try and apologise or compensate for their error.\n\nHowever, we did finally managed to rearrange our schedule even though it was not ideal. \n\n On arrival though the staff were lovely and did apologise and we were given a fabulous room. Although I did find a strip of hydrocortisone tablets which I presume were left by the previous occupants ! \n\nThe cream tea was ok but not amazing for example egg sandwiches, tough pastrami and cream cheese and cucumber. \n\nThe spa facial was terrible, it felt like a beginner was doing it.\n\nThe spa itself is so basic, this is not a place to come for a spa treat. It consists of a sauna and a steam room and a large Jacuzzi. If you want a comfortable seat, there are some really comfortable chairs but only 4 and the spa takes 8 people so shame if you want to sit down anywhere inside ( there is further seating outside)\n\nThe reason I gave 3 stars ins that the staff were mostly very pleasant and tried very hard to make us feel welcome.\n\nAll in all this place should and could be much better, the problem is they charge the prices as if they are.

I don\u2019t even know where to begin with this. I would give a zero star if possible. \nMe and my boyfriend came here for my birthday weekend and he paid over \u00A3220 a night which we can all agree is a lot of money. \nWe came back in the early hours of Sunday morning after drinking at the bar and was welcomed in the corridor with a very strong smell of weed and tobacco which filled the corridor and had started seeping into our room. My boyfriend asked management to check this and they could not he bothered to pursue it saying that \u2018there\u2019s nothing we can do\u2019 despite him voicing his concerns over safety with people smoking. The smell had not gone in the morning either, with a similar smell appearing again the next night where management then thought they\u2019d try to tackle it by spraying fragrance to mask the smell. \nWe had room service and as much as they did tidy our room they did also manage to break our toilet flusher and not get it fixed, meaning my boyfriend had to ask to get it fixed but was met with quite some hostility and a \u2018do we have to?\u2019 kind of attitude (an attitude we had for the entire time here).\nThe service of the young waitresses was usually very good and they were very pleasant and polite. The same cannot be said for the management who were rude, obnoxious and stuck-up. I could go on about how poor the management was and how we were spoken to, as we felt like we were spoken down to especially for the fact we are generally speaking younger than the other guests. \not say that it has ruined my birthday weekend is an understatement. We would both also agree that if there is a wedding on during your stay that you should have an even greater reason not to stay here as normal hotel guests get cast aside like second rate citizens whilst management and staff prioritise wedding guests that get the pick of the place. \nOverall factoring in the grandeur of the place and the price but then with the horrific service you would be left bitterly disappointed. This place may be nice to visit for a day or for a wedding but I would avoid at all costs if you plan on staying here for anything nice other than a wedding. You honestly would get better service at a premier inn or Travelodge.

Went to Eden Spa for a full Swedish massage as a weekend away for my girlfriend\u2019s birthday weekend and I was left feeling massively disappointed with it all. \nFor starters this is an expensive experience so naturally you are expecting a reasonably high set of standards, well I wouldn\u2019t go in there with that mindset as you will be left as disappointed as we both were. \nThe masseuses were polite enough and did ask what we did and did not want massaged before the treatment began. However I may as well told them my mum\u2019s maiden name as my masseuse did not listen in the slightest. She proceeded to massage my feet despite me asking multiple times at the beginning to leave them alone but also my scalp. Everything I asked for fell on deaf ears. \nMy masseuse left the room on more than one occasion during the treatment, disrupting the calm feeling and came back later to just continue massaging what I didn\u2019t ask for with her rough sand paper like hands. \nThe music in the background sounded like a ringtone on repeat for the entire 55 minutes. \nI did not want to interrupt my masseuse during the treatment because A) I didn\u2019t feel like I should have to after asking her multiple times at the beginning to not massage my feet or scalp and B) I didn\u2019t want to make things awkward and interrupt my girlfriend who seemed to get a reasonably good masseuse. \nso to conclude the overall experience in terms of being good or bad most likely lays down to which masseuse you get. The staff were polite enough but did not take kindly to our complaint so I would not return here again, unless you want a pretty sub-par massage.

What a wonderful time we had at Down Hall last Sunday. It started by having drinks served in the bar which were very enjoyable. Then followed by a delicious three course Sunday lunch. Wonderful service and we were made to feel very special by the food and beverage supervisor Natasha nothing was too much trouble for her. Five stars can\u2019t wait to come back to that beautiful relaxing atmosphere that is Down Hall. Thank you.

A great find for a night away for our daughter's birthday where we were able to bring our dog. The grounds were lovely and if you come with your dog you will get an ground floor room for easy access. \nEnjoyed the bar and restaurant in the evening. The food was good. \nBreakfast buffet in the morning was nice. Our trip was made more special by the the fact we could all get away for the night as a family.

We only spent one night here as we where stating in the area, but after one night stay we have decided we need to come back and spend a Long weekend here as it was so good.\n\nFrom the minute we walked into reception all of the staff where really friendly and helpful, it was as if we where royalty, my wife really loved the attention - at the bar Kali and Kelly also did everything possible to make our stay perfect even though the bar was very full, their professionalism was exemplary, all in all a huge thank you to all concerned, the room was fantastic also, we are really looking forward to coming back. If I had to mention anything, there was a Bentley parked in the first disabled space with no badge tut tut ! photo to follow.

Booked directly with hotel for a birthday weekend with my best friend - *spa booked separately please see separate review *\nRoom was lovely and bright very comfortable and everything you need for relaxing stay. \nDinner allowance is \u00A330 pp - we had wine and side dishes and 3 courses each and paid \u00A358 on top which I felt was still a lovely meal in pleasant surrounds with good service. Food was lovely. \nBreakfast was nice but we were directed to a desperate dinning room clearly for those who have booked a package as less attention to presentation and service \nTiny tea cups and a table with tea bags and hot water - surely a tea pot for the table isn\u2019t going to bust the budget ! \nStaff all very friendly and happy to help \nHotel grounds very nicely kept - walks available around hotel.

We arrived at down hall to revisit the hotel we stayed at the year before the hotel is a short distance from the m 11 easy to get to we booked in got our rooms and met in the bar down hall is a large comfortable hotel in well maintained grounds after an afternoons activities we returned to have drinks and a quick bite in the bar lovely sandwiches and some chips there are various snack available sharing platters etc a well stocked bar exterior seating then retired to a comfortable room for forty winks and get ready for dinner meet in the bar then on to the dining room nice food lovely starters mains and sweet great food good friends and good hotel only issue was they was so busy that they forgot some drinks when we ordered and when it was mentioned was rectified quickly all in all they are good and it's worth a visit and we will return son.

What a pleasant surprise. We booked this hotel on the last minute as we were attending a family funeral with the Celebration of Life being held here afterwards. Thought it logistical to stay in the same venue but not sure what to expect! \n\nOn arrival we noted a wedding underway at the same time as our event and expected to haves slight clash of ceremony a low versus a high, however we were very wrong. The hotel was very professional to each event and gave us all the empathy and celebration that was required.\n\nGiven that there was a somber element versus a very light bright and lovely event ongoing we were treated very with the utmost respect and professionalism.\n\nThis hotel is lovely, rooms are very well priced and furnished, dining facilities excellent and beyond all the setting is amazing.\n\nDeinatley stay here again if the situation arose.\n\nIdeal for any airport Luton, Stansted or even Heathrow.\n\nThanks so much.
