I have been here a few times now and have never been disappointed.

We ate in the main restaurant for dinner and the menu was varied with many choices for all pallets. The food and service was fantastic. The bar also has a great cocktail menu if that's your thing which is open all day. There is something very tranquil about the main room.

The grounds are beautiful and well kept. We last had a ground floor room with double doors out to the patio. It was a pet friendly room, although we didn't have any pets. We didn't specifically ask for this type of room but were given it anyway. Not that it mattered as was very clean and you wouldn't have known. But something to bear in mind if you have any pet allergies.

We wanted to visit the spa, but was fully booked for all 3 days were there. so you must pre-book before arriving at the hotel. The spa is small and therefore treatment rooms and therapists get booked up quick. You also have to pre-book use of the wet spa so don't get caught out by that.

We had afternoon tea on the first day which was fantastic and very English. The whole experience very relaxed and civilised.

The rooms are very spacious. One of my favourite things about this hotel is the water softness. I know some people don't care about this, but I live only half hour up the road and the water is terrible, very hard. I noticed when I washed my hair just how soft the water was. The only down side to the hotel for me is the hard beds. I do like a firm bed, but they are just uncomfortable.

Other than that, would recommend this hotel. Very relaxing and accessible location.

I took my mum for lunch for her birthday. We had drinks at the outside bar first. The meal was lovely and staff were very attentive. The grounds were so nice and we are looking to stay here son. We had a look around the spa as well. We will defiantly be returning.

We visited here for a friend's wedding and while the wedding itself was done really well, the hotel had some serious issues and we went away feeling like we wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. It all started falling apart at the dinner service, where the waiters served some random dish that I didn't order for the mains. When I explained that the dish was not what I ordered, someone went to check and then returned with the same dish that was not what I ordered. Re-specified the case. I was then told that there were no more of what I had ordered left and therefore I had to make do with the dish that I hadn't ordered. I told them I can't eat chickpeas (allergy). The waiter just walked away. Finally, a manager came over and I asked if he could just do me a fish dish but with no dairy. Of course, we'll sort that out for you. Only they didn't. Another waiter came over and told me there was no fish, no meat, nothing left because everything was pre-ordered to a set amount. My patience was running out, considering they had a restaurant on site and they didn't offer that I could order a meal from there at all. All the male waiters were exceptionally abrupt, rude and just didn't give a toss. By this time everyone else had finished their meal and there were no side vegetables left (which I could have at least eaten in the meantime) - so essentially on a table of 10 people there was barely enough side veg for 9 people. so I didn't get anything in the confusion. When I asked for at least more side veg, was told I couldn't have any. In the end, we had to leave the wedding (by now dessert had come and gone) and order at the restaurant. They kindly offered to serve it to me at the wedding reception hall. Only it took 40 minutes to arrive. And they were more concerned with who could pay for it there and then. Atrocious behaviour. What's worse, there were several 'kid's plates' of chicken, gravy and veg that they served and went untouched. so, yeah, no food in the place my arse. Next day, the staff were under prepared for the numbers of people at breakfast (which was quite standard for such a nice venue). Later, the spa treatments my sis, mother and I had were woefully sub par. The spa venue itself was nice. My pedicure was basic, though my therapist was very lovely. My sister and mother's massages were barely that and my sis's therapist took her in 5 minutes late and then cut her appointment off by a further 5 minutes. We contested and got money off but it was a shame to see that they didn't really care to start with. We then thought to order some cream teas before we headed off and again, though our server was the kindest, sweetest staff member there (she got me a girlfriend cream tea), we had to wait 35 minutes for it be served. Tellingly, the party sitting on the next table made a formal complaint to the manager as their tea order was royally messed up twice (served coffee once, served tea ice cold the other time). Such a crying shame, considering the lovely rooms and grounds on offer and the prices they're charging.

We came for a romantic weekend away. Grounds and hotel rooms were lovely we were very pleased. We had a nice walk around the greenery. Self service breakfast but must say a worker named Natasha was extremely helpful, kind and attentive to our needs. She also followed us out later onto the outdoor area (which is a lovely place to sit for lunch) and continued to be very polite & helpful. Also a young lady named Lauren equally just as nice. They made our time at Downhall very easy and relaxing.

Overall it’s a great place for a peaceful weekend away.

I stopped here with my husband prior to commencing our honeymoon the next morning. Upon check-in the gentleman that served us was simply wonderful, I wish I had taken his name as he made our whole stay simply magical. Initially we had booked a standard double room, as we had an early get up the following morning to catch our flight at Stansted. However, on check-in the gentleman informed me we had been upgraded (quite significantly) to a feature room. The room was delightful, with stunning views of this glorious hotel.
In the evening we had a few drinks in the hotels outside bar and then had a wonderful meal in the hotel restaurant.
Will certainly be returning, a wonderful hotel, attentive staff set in a beautiful location.

Wedding banging firstly so nothing to do with that.
Well Trumpy £15 per drink so Friday before wedding if your staying over expect a master blaster of a bill we had a meal there and drinks finished at 12ish with free drink the next day £460 not including the room. Room are very hot windows only opens 1inch, shower ok not the best I’ve had, hotel a bit dis jointed, average deluxe I’m my opinion. ( over looking car park £200 per night) one annoying thing if you have the window open the blind bangs with the breeze every few minutes ever with no breeze🤨
Breakfast poor self sev food not great, well not for the price anyway, toaster slowest in history there was a queue in a not to busy restaurant? Why one old toaster?. Service haphazard ask for tea get coffee soner or latter. But by this point your just happy for any hot drink, just poor little bits but for the price not the greatest of value. No air con, blar Blar blar, look all I’m saying is this is Essex not central London so why the crap value for money because I tell you once your there you have to suffer it regardless of what you drink!

Looked forward to our stay at down hall hotel and spa and this was to be the base to our friends wedding which was held not far from the hotel. A lot of us from the wedding were all staying here, about 25 in total !
Check in
Upon arrival, all good, although others within our group had issues checking in we did not and managed to escape what seemed like a common issue at the hotel ?
Room
Our room on first inspection seemed ok for what we needed it for. Decent sized shower and bathroom, bed comfortable and not a terrible view but I was a little bit miffed as to how are friends had got a room a lot bigger than ours for a better rate ? I understand prices differ different times of the year, peak and such and other rooms are valued as best sellers etc but booked rooms at the same time for the same Weekend on the same booking site so baffled as to why this would happen ?
Staff
This was ours and are groups biggest issue during our stay ! From ordering food and drink and having
ot wait a minimum of half hour most occasions (I only saw one waiter actually write an order down in our whole time) To being forgotten about and had to ask many times for things or spoken to very rudely and abruptly ! I tried to defend the waitress at one point and said maybe it’s the way it’s done in Essex ? But going to other venues during our stay, I was wrong !
First night, a couple of us had stayed at the hotel as we arrived late as others in the group went to a nearby pub ! We wish we had ! Ordered our drinks after a Long hot drive from down south, 5 1/2 hours in total ! Had to wait half hour for drinks to arrive and that was with asking after 10 minutes had passed as you could imagine our thirst needed quenching !
Others had ordered food in this time and one of our party had ordered a starter and a main course. Everyone’s food arrived and although a little slow was very good, our friends had not ! Other people ordered food and received it, our friends food had still not arrived ! After much waiting her food finally arrived although we had all finished ours so she would eat on her own ! Not the best of starts !
You don’t expect the staff of such a grand hotel that is Down hall to be, what seemed, lacking
Basic customer service skills ! so not sure I can blame the staff themselves but feel management need to take a stronger stance on staff training and
have policies and procedures in place that our group of friends thought all were desperately needed but so did others in the hotel as well !
You seem to do many weddings at the down hall and do them well by the amount we witnessed at the Weekend but fail to look after the ‘other ‘ guests who have also paid to stay there and believe it or not are not an inconvenience as sometimes we seemed ! All in all we won’t be booking up anytime son to stay at the down hall hotel or as we like to call it let down hall hotel and spa !

My fiancé and I planned to go to Down Hall to celebrate our engagement. A couple of days before we had a family emergency as a family member suffered a stroke. I asked to postpone to another weekend however down hall refused. We therefore had to go. We tried to book dinner before check in and we were told we were automatically booked in for 8.45 as they were fully booked. It was a bit late but we realised they were busy and understood. We therefore ordered room service which attracts a fee which was a bit excessive. Our £200 offer included an allowance towards dinner and a bottle of champagne. We asked for ice for the champagne which took an hour to arrive, we'd asked twice. We then realised we were the closest to the wedding party venue and we could hear the music incredibly loudly at 10.30pm. We complained and asked why we were put next door to the wedding hall. We were moved which surprised us as we were told it was fully booked. We then went to another room which was supposed to be an upgrade but it was smaller and when we put the light on the light had what looked like c.20 flies in it. We had to take a picture as it was so bad. We said to the receptionist who showed us the room that it hadn't been cleaned. He explained that the flies had been there just today. It was obvious that they'd been there for a while. I told the staff we were disappointed that we couldn't postpone the stay. The receptionist said it would've been fine to postpone. That annoyed me the most as we were told there was absolutely no way we could postpone. With the messy light in the room my fiancé had to clean it himself in the end. The flies turned out to be wasps! We asked for several things from room service which never arrived. We were told we could order a newspaper which we were then charged for. One plus point was the breakfast was not bad and the dessert was nice. In the end we got a small refund but for the cost we were left feeling really disappointed. We'd been to down hall before it was good but we won't stay again unfortunately. I don't make a habit
of complaining at all but felt let down and therefore obliged to complain in that case.

Live local to this venue and used to go there some years ago. Recently had a £6M investment however and now it's fantastic. New open bar area at rear with wood burner, cocktail bar and music. You can sit on the extensive outdoor furniture and watch the sunset every evening, just wonderful. Staff are fantastic also and all so friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend as have also stayed there on numerous occasions and rooms are lovely and very reasonably priced.

We attended a family wedding on a Friday with an overnight stay.
The hotel is a large mansion house, recently redecorated, standing in beautiful grounds.
The wedding venue used was an elegant room overlooking the gardens where drinks were served afterwards in beautiful sunshine. The wedding breakfast and evening reception was in a suitable sized banquesting room.
We found this an ideal wedding venue.
Our hotel room although quite small was elegantly decorated and furnished and with new bathroom facilities.
We did not have time to use the hotel Spa although looked good from the outside.

Dear Chloe R

I am sorry to hear of the disappointment with your viewing of Down Hall as a potential wedding venue. I have discussed this with my team in full and the wedding co-ordinator with whom you met with is surprised by your comments. We see guests from a variety of backgrounds on a daily basis and never make any judgement based on observations. Please accept my apologies if you were made to feel uncomfortable.

You were greeted and refreshments were offered. As your enquiry related to a 2022 wedding, you were advised that we do not yet have the rates available. During the meeting, you mentioned that you had viewed barns and were considering that style of venue. It was therefore suggested that you first decide exactly what kind of venue you would like and if it was a Country House, we would be delighted to discuss further.

As advised during your meeting, there was a wedding taking place at Down Hall on Saturday which meant we were unable to show you all the facilities. The areas that were pointed out to you were actually in use with the wedding and therefore we could not be accessed.

I would like to wish you the best of luck with your venue search and for the future and should you ever wish to return to Down Hall, please feel free to contact me directly.

Kind regards

Mark
General Manager.

We chose this hotel from the Red Letter Day list and were not disappointed. The hotel is well looked after and the grounds are stunning. The room was very comfortable and I had, hands down, one of the best spa treatments I’ve ever had! We were also blessed with beautiful weather so had breakfast outside the following morning which was a real treat.

Although the cocktails were delicious they were very pricey, and I would steer clear of ordering the chips from the room service menu - £4 for 6 chips!

Overall though we had a lovely stay and would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

Dear Sara1973hous

Many thanks for your feedback following your recent visit to the Eden Spa and I am sorry to hear of the disappointment with your experience.

It is surprising that you are commenting on the lack of a pool and that the spa access is for 2 hours as both the facilities and length of our packages are clearly displayed on our website and on that of all the partners we work with.

It is a shame that you will not be returning, however, should this change, please feel free to contact me directly for assistance with your reservation.

Kind regards

Mark
General Manager.
