31/34 Pictures of Hyde Park and surrounding area

The Elfin Oak is located adjacent to the Diana memorial Playground in the North West corner of
Kensington Gardens. The Elfin oak, a gift of Lady Fortescue in response to the Lansbury Appeal,
was the 3 year project of children's books illustrator Ivor Innes. The 9 foot tall oak
was hand carved by Innes and decorated with Elves, fairies, birds, goblins and more. The oak
was at that time in Richmond park and was moved to Kensington gardens in 1928. The Oak
underwent restoration work in 1951 and 1996. The oak is thought to be nearly 900 years old.
