To use your dialup modem lead in a UK phone socket you will need a BT adapter. The USA and a large part of Europe use the RJ11 socket which will not fit a UK BT socket. Using a laptop from your hotel room does not mean you are restricted to hotels advertising 'internet connection' while on your vacation or trip. As long as the accommodation has a direct dial phone that unplugs from the wall via a standard socket then you simply plug your dialup modem into that socket. Hotels advertising modem connection usually mean they have a spare socket for the modem or the also offer high speed access, normally via Ethernet (rj45) connection. These days wireless access is also offered normally in the public areas but increasingly in rooms too. Local Taxes in the UK are called V.A.T. This stands for value added tax and is charged at the rate of 17.5%. It is charged on most goods and services (including hotel accommodation). This can often be reclaimed on goods if you can show you live, and are taking the goods, abroad. UK hotels ratings. This is a general Lodging guide and not specific to any individual hotel or accommodation type. scale 1-5 1 star: cheap and cheerful, hostel type accommodation, basic services. 2 star: slightly better facilities, still cheap/budget/hostel class. 3 star: middle ground between better facilities, services and budget accommodation. 4 star: at this level a good all round standard is expected in all areas, facilities, services. Expect personal services such as concierge, 24 hour reception and daily maid service. 5 star: At this level the hotel would expect to be of a luxury standard in all areas, facilities and services. Guest houses are given a diamond rating which weighs the rating towards service rather than facilities. Ratings are usually given by a body such as the English Tourist Board or a recognised organisation such as the AA although in some cases the lodging ratings may be self rated. The biggest mistake we see other websites make is to call diamond ratings the same as star ratings, and they are not. Don't forget in the UK cars drive on the left with the driver on the right hand side of the car. This is in common with places such as Gibraltar and Australia but out of step with most of the world. UK: This is an abbreviation of United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is itself a shortened form of the more correct term United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Only Northern Ireland is part of the UK while Southern Ireland is totally sovereign in its own right. GB: This is an abbreviation of Great Britain. Great Britain is the three mainland countries of Wales, Scotland and England. Wales and Scotland do not share a border while England shares a border with both Wales and Scotland. The three together form an island entirely surrounded by sea. Northern Ireland is across the Irish Sea and not part of Great Britain, it does not share any borders with Great Britain. Room sizes are always something that often surprises first time London visitors. Generally room sizes are smaller than those in many other countries. This is more prevalent in B&B type accommodation where the building is a conversion (the large majority of them) and not a purpose built hotel. If you would like to ride on a traditional old fashioned double decker routemaster bus in central London then routes 9 (Hammersmith to Aldwych) and 15 (Paddington to Blackwall) still use them. |

in a law making it illegal to smoke in a public place or workplace. Many people
have been confused as to how this affect hotels. Well the law only applies to
the public areas such as lobby, restaurant, bar etc. Hotels still can and do
offer smoking and no-smoking rooms. However in response to a desire by many
travellers for smoke free hotels more and more hotels are in fact going all
no-smoking. This is their choice and nothing to with the change in the law.HOTEL NEWS

Officially the centre of London is taken as
Charing Cross Station.
However as far as the tourist heart of the capital is concerned its really on
the South East side of the central areas. For the purposes of measuring
distances on this website we use
Piccadilly Circus
as the point of reference as we believe in the real world it represents the
central tourist heart of London for most people. The distance between the two is
actually only 0.4 miles.

Originally London was any area with a London postcode which none of the above have. However in modern times London is taken as any area within the M25 motorway which places Heathrow alone within Greater London. |
