This type of marketing has become known as Mystery Hotels. The savings are real and can be substantial. Although the hotels are more often than not above the budget range, the actual discounted rates can be in line with the budget sector. The information on this page is intended to point you to cheap hotels in or close to central London. As you move further out from the central and tourist areas rates will drop dramatically across hotels.
Note: Remember when are comparing rates across hotels and websites to check if breakfast and taxes are included. This can make quite a difference to the final amount. Also note the different polices across hotels and chains as to cancellation. Also make sure rates are for the room for occupants and not per person. These will vary from advance payment and no refund to pay on check-out and cancel up to day of arrival with no penalty.

The budget sector within London has become the fasting growing area for accommodation since the early 2000’s. Traditionally the cheaper end of the market was the domain of the converted bed and breakfast houses/hotels. These are normally large Victorian terraced houses, often 3 or 4 in a row that have been converted from residential use into proving overnight accommodation. Not ideal since they are not purpose built and often provide small rooms which come as quite a surprise to foreign visitors unused to the size of these types of rooms.
However a recent trend has seen a huge expansion in the budget hotel chain market. The main players here are Holiday Inn Express, Ibis, Premier Inn and Travelodge. The big plus to these brands is that mostly they are building new hotels, contemporary accommodation but at low end rates. How are they undercutting the other sectors? Well the main thing is they cut away the extras and provide just the basics, each doing this to a different extent. So there may be less staff per guest, no toiletries, all meals extra, shower no bath etc. These all depend on the chain and the hotel. You will also find they choose more economical locations, so you won’t find them in prime areas such as Mayfair or the West End although they are still within central London. However slightly against this trend has been growing number of budget hotels with the City of London, once the preserve of the high end accommodation providers.

Areas
The alternative to searching through the cheap chains is to look at certain areas that have a reputation for providing cheaper accommodation but still within easy reach of Central London. The main areas within or on the borders of central London for this type of accommodation are mainly Earls Court and Paddington and to a lesser extent Victoria/Pimlico. Another big plus with hotels in these districts is they have large number of hotels where triple and quads are available, far more so than most other areas.

Earls Court (SW5 postcode)
Earls Court centre’s around the major Exhibition centre of the same name. The basics for a good base are all there, plenty of amenities and shops in the surrounding areas, good public transport links and easy reach to the very central areas. Walking distance to the major tourist area of Kensington and the Earls Court tube station is on the Piccadilly line which means you can ride out to Heathrow airport without swapping trains in around 40 minutes. Earls Court is on the western edge of Central London and has a high density of cheap London hotels.

Victoria/Pimlico (SW1 postcode)
The most central of the districts listed in this section to provide a high density of cheap hotels in London. Victoria Station itself hosts the Gatwick Express services while Victoria Coach Station is the final destination for all inter-town bus services into London. Main shopping and amenities are to be found along Victoria Street. The majority of the cheaper hotels are with the sector known as Pimlico which also has its own tube stop. This is the area to the south east of the station along St Georges Drive and Belgrave Road. Its something of a paradox that while Victoria provides some of the cheapest hotels within central London it also has the most expensive residences which are to be found along Eaton Square.
