33/52 Pictures of the Tower of London

The Beauchamp Tower. This was built by Edward I in 1281
when it replaced a fortified gatehouse that stood on this site. Notable for
using a large amount of brick as opposed to stone for its construction which
at the time was an innovative approach. The tower was sued as a prison for
high ranking prisoners. Said to be named after Thomas Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick,
who was a prisoner here between 1397 and 1399.
Also known as Cobham's Tower after Henry Brooke, Lord Cobham, who died here
after 14 years of imprisonment. Opened to visitors in the 1800's.
