31/52 Pictures of the Tower of London

This is the Brian Catling Sculpture that was erected in
September 2006 to mark the approximate area on Tower Green where 10
executions took place. It replaced a small plaque that was already on this
site. Executions were rare inside the Tower of London and normally carried
out on Tower Hill nearby. Those killed here would have been because it was
too much of a risk of a riot for them to be killed publically on Tower Hill. The Tower of London signposts this area as the scaffold site. All who were executed are named
on the memorial including 3 Queens. The best known of these would be Queen, Anne Boleyn, accused of
adultery and beheaded by a French swordsman on May 19 1536. In 1861 Queen
Victoria requested a plaque be placed on the spot where Anne Boleyn was
killed which is where this memorial is placed.
