Trafalgar Square is one of the London Landmarks that is known
throughout the world as being synonymous with London. Perhaps best
known for the pigeons that tourists loved to have their pictures
taken with and also to feed from their hands, this, sadly. is now
not allowed by the London Mayor. The stalls that used to sell the
bird feed are now removed. What you will find at Trafalgar Square is
the imposing statue of Horatio Nelson upon his column looking down
on this bustling Square and surrounded the famous 4 lions at the
base of the column. Indeed the square was built to honour the famous
British Admiral
after his success in defeating the Spanish armada at Cape Trafalgar
off the Spanish coast. Trafalgar Square was designed by John Nash
and was constructed during the 1830's. The Square also features two
water fountains which make great fun for summer dips or the
occasional celebrations.
On the Northern side is the National Gallery with its huge
collection of paintings and regular exhibitions. To the East is
Buckingham Palace and to the South is Parliament Square. On the
Eastern side of the square is Canada House which is open to the
public for viewing. Come Christmas time Trafalgar Square is noted
for its Christmas Tree which is actually sent from the Norwegians as
a thank you for the British liberation of Norway during the Second
World War.
Picture 15, The National Gallery:
Houses one of the greatest collections of European painting in the world. The original idea behind the National Gallery was to provide a collection of works that would be enjoyed by and be accessible too the entire country. The first purchase was £57,000 for the collection of John Angerstein in 1824. At that time the building was in Pall Mall before its current site today on the North Side of Trafalgar Square.
