Historically it takes name from the pub in that area, the Fitzrovia Tavern (16 Charlotte Street) which was a meeting place for writers and other similar groups of people with shared interests. The name became popular in the 1930's. The first record of it being used in type was in a 1940 column in the Daily Express newspaper. There is no official recognition of its borders either, but its generally accepted as being the square formed by Euston Road (North), Tottenham Court Road (East), Oxford Street (South) and Great Portland Street (West). However it can also be thought of as stretching to Portland Place to the West and to Gower Street to the east. The Southern section of Fitzrovia is also referred to as North Soho but its a mute point whether its really part of Soho. There is a clear line at Oxford Street which defines the nature of the two different areas. Fitzrovia is quite a mix of elements, with many offices, private residences and thriving nightlife all gelling together. On top of the busy night life spots yet also a quite area in comparison to other surroundings locations. Most notable landmark in the area is the BT Telecom Tower (formerly the Post Office Tower), which is one of the Cities tallest and most distinct buildings. Other attractions here include Pollocks Toy Museum formed from two separate houses and located at 1 Scala Street. |
