SW19 covers the area of Wimbledon and of course is synonymous
with the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships held there each year as part of
the four Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments. The other well known landmark in
Wimbledon is Wimbledon Common. In total Wimbledon Common covers an are in
excess of 1140 acres with amenities that include a Golf course, Cricket
pitches, Rugby pitch, athletics facilities and horse riding. The
centre of Wimbledon (around Wimbledon Station) has good shopping facilities
and other amenities including the aptly named Centre Court Shopping Centre.
Other tractions include Southside House and the Wimbledon tennis Museum.
SW19 is to the South of London and on the other side of the River Thames to
the the normal tourist areas. For access to these areas by road the nearest
abridges are Hammersmith Bridge, Putney Bridge and Wandsworth bridge. SW19
is also notable for having one of the ugliest buildings in the UK. The Colliers Wood Tower
was voted the UK's ugliest building in a BBC poll in 2006. At one time
the area had the largest supermarket in Europe thanks to the Savacentre
supermarket and it is still one the largest in Europe.
