The London postcode area of EC1 takes in the section of the City of London known as Clerkenwell which is within the London borough of Islington. This part of London was once home to a large Italian population from the 1850's till the 1960's and earned the knickname of 'Little Italy'. As the name suggests, the area was named after the Well in Farringdon Lane, Clerks Well. Attractions in this area include Londons oldest Parish church, St Bartholomew-the-Great. Clerkenwell is a mix of lower and middle/upper class residential housing alongside offices and commercial premises. There are plenty of amenities in the area including many shops, restaurants and bar around the main roads in the area, Goswell Road, Farringdon Road, Old Street and City Road. In recent years the area has become quite fashionable and has seen a growth in the number of bars and restaurants.
