SE24 South London takes in
Herne Hill and parts of Tulse Hill and is in the London borough of Croydon.
It includes the whole of Brockwell Park. The major roads running through
SE24 are the A2214 and the A215. The town has a population of around 12,000
and offers a range of amenities taking a range of shops, restaurants and
bars. Herne Hill dates right back to at least 1291 at which point it was a
mix of farmland and woods and called the Manor of Milkwell. The area grew
into what was to become the south London suburb that we know today with the
arrival of the railway in 1862 which connected the area to London proper.
The long history of the are means there are many examples of buildings that
date back well into the early 1800s still around and in use.
Places of interest within SE24 include Brockwell Hall and Brockwell Lido
(both within Brockwell Park) and Herne Hill Velodrome (one of the oldest
cycling tracks in the world).
