Introduction: The London Marriott
County Hall Hotel commands one of the most enviable locations of any
hotel in London. Right on the banks of the River Thames adjacent to
Westminster Bridge and overlooking the capitals number one
attraction and standout landmark, the
London Eye. This is basically a giant Catherine wheel that
affords amazing views over most of London. Walking distance from
Waterloo station which is one of London's 5 main railways stations
with both national services and London tube services. The local area
is very busy during the weekends but can be relatively quiet on
weekends.
The building itself is synonymous with London, having been opened in
1922 by King George V and designed by Ralph Knott, the building was
used to house London's local government (GLC). The local government
was abolished by legislation in 1986 and the building sold to
private owners.
Part of the old County Hall is now the major attraction of the
London Aquarium. Next to the hotel is
Jubilee
Gardens, a park that was built in 1977 to celebrate the Queens
silver jubilee. Along this stretch of the Thames is the South Bank
complex home to such places of interest such as the Royal Festival
Hall, Hayward Gallery and the National Theatre. Just on the other
side of Westminster bridge is
Parliament Square where the House Commons (Parliament), House
of Lords and Westminster Abbey are located. Other nearby attractions
include
Jewel Tower (0.34 miles),
Imax Cinema (0.4 miles),
10 Downing Street (0.4 miles), Lambeth Palace (0.4 miles),
Imperial War Museum (0.5 miles),
Cleopatra's Needle (0.5 miles),
National Gallery (0.7 miles) and the
Tate Britain (0.8 miles).
