The London postcode area of EC1 takes in the section of the City of London known as Clerkenwell which is within the London borough of Islington. This part of London was once home to a large Italian population from the 1850’s till the 1960’s and earned the knickname of ‘Little Italy’. As the name suggests, the area was named after the Well in Farringdon Lane, Clerks Well. Attractions in this area include London’s oldest Parish church, St Bartholomew-the-Great. Clerkenwell is a mix of lower and middle/upper class residential housing alongside offices and commercial premises.
