Introduction: The Lancaster
London Hotel first opened in 1967 and occupies a small island in the
middle of a mini gyratory system that connects Bayswater Road and
Sussex Gardens. Its right in front of
Hyde Park and
Kensington Gardens, a prime location. Hyde Park, literally yards
from the hotels doorsteps, covers more than 350 yards with some 4000
trees. There's much to and see, the park is full of statues,
landscaped gardens, snacks bars along with the
Serpentine Gallery and boating in good weather on the lake. It
joins with Kensington Park Gardens which is where the Princess Diana
Memorial is located. If you walk across Hyde Park to its south side
you come to the very popular and chic area of Knightsbridge, perhaps
best known as the location for the Harrods department store. The
area immediately surrounding the hotel is mainly residential with
nearest major shopping at Queensway (0.5 miles) which has a range of
shops and bars along with a skating rink and covered shopping mall
called Whitley's. Paddington station, one of 5 main stations serving
London, and is only 400 yards from the hotel. From here services run
all over the country as well within London and its also home the
Heathrow Express, the non-stop train service to Heathrow airport
(15 minutes to the central terminals). Lancaster Gate station on the
tube network is actually opposite the hotel. Bayswater has a large
middle eastern population and a lot of the local shops reflect this
element. Some other local places of interest include
Alexandra Fleming laboratory (0.3 miles),
Albert Memorial (0.7 miles), Church Street Market (0.7 miles),
Speakers Corner (0.7 miles), Royal Albert Hall (0.7 miles) and
Kensington Palace (0.8 miles).
